Turkey Pen Pals

I just got back from a memorial gathering for a co-worker’s dad.  This obviously tugs at my heart with memories of my mom’s funeral a year ago this week.  One of the biggest memories of that day was seeing that same co-worker and many more show up at her funeral.  When it comes down to it there isn’t much you can really say or do at a memorial or funeral that can “make it all better”; but just showing up has an amazing impact.  At least I know it did for me.  Which reminds me, I owe you the details on the turkey “God wink” story.

As I said in my blog last week – the morning of my mom’s funeral, we were driving with our pastor, away from my dad’s assisted living center.  I was thinking about how my mom didn't care much for meat the last few years, but really enjoyed the turkey Geri prepared on Christmas 2009, when suddenly seven wild turkeys ran out in front of our car.  I learned from co-workers that evening, that the turkeys showed up at the office where I worked that day.  They pretty much settled in to the neighborhood where I worked and started attracting a lot of attention.

One day you see a photo on facebook of a neighbor chasing a turkey down the street.  Then you’d hear about a turkey chasing a high school girl, screaming, down the sidewalk.  There were discussions on what kind of breakfast cereals the turkeys like best in the morning.   Those turkeys became so popular that they even made it into the local newspaper – ok, there’s not that much going on around our little town, so I guess it’s not so amazing that the turkeys made the news.

Well those turkeys stuck around and stuck around.  They were basically seen daily by our office for 2 ½ months.  Until they disappeared or moved on – on March 24, 2010 – the day my dad died.

I’m confident that God is trying to tell me something, by bringing those turkeys to me.  The only catch – I don’t have a clue what it is.  So the only thing I can do is share the turkey story and my feelings in this blog – maybe that’s why it happened – as I’m not typically one to write my thoughts down.  So until I figure out otherwise, I guess those turkeys are my pen pals from God.
